The annual “James River Classic” tournament hosts the Think Pink
theme and raised $2,500.
The James River Blaze was excited this year to take our annual
basketball tournament to a new direction in sponsoring the Think Pink
theme. With the help of many volunteers and a field of over 60 teams
from the eastern states; we raised $2,500. A
check was presented to VCU Massey Cancer Center – in attendance from
left to right:
Tony Suber (Vice President JRAC), Toni Henderson (President JRAC), Pat
Pinkard (Founder JRAC), and Lisa Smith (VCU Clinical Research Nurse for
the breast health team)
Amy Turner heads to David & Elkins College. Amy
has been playing for James River Blaze since she was 10 years old and
now heads to David & Elkins College on a Division II basketball
scholarship.
Our own Sydney Henderson is heading to Mount St. Mary's
University. Sydney Henderson signs a division I full ride scholarship
to play basketball at Mount St. Mary's.
Three of our own James River Blaze girls become
nominees for the 2009 McDonald's All American High School Girls
Basketball: Richelle Price, Atlee High School, Mechanicsville;
Barbara Sitton, L.C. Bird High School, Chesterfield; and Ruthanne
Doherty, L.C. Bird High School, Chesterfield.
Richelle Price, Atlee High School standout, heads to
Western Carolina: Atlee's star
forward signed her National Letter of Intent Friday morning with family
and close friends watching, officially becoming a Catamount.
Barbara Sitton signs to become a Wildcat
at Davidson: The 5-5 guard has been a member of the first-team
All-Dominion District, the first-team All-Digital Sports in Virginia,
second-team All-Central Region and second-team All-Metro as named by the
Richmond Times Dispatch. She has also been a co-MVP and Defensive MVP on
her team.
Brianna Dillard joins the Gardner Webb Runnin' Bulldogs; is a two-year letter winner that earned first-team all-district
honors as a junior. That same season, Dillard garnered
second-team all-region accolades. A talented combination
athlete, she earned a spot on the Richmond Times-Dispatch
second-team all-Metro squad.
Chelsea Coward will play for Longwood
University in Farmville, VA. Chelsea has been a member of
Capital District's Hanover High School Girls Varsity Basketball Team
since 2005. During her career she has been a member of the Capital
District All Academic Team for 2005-2008.
Ruthanne Doherty University of Hartford, West Hartford, CT:
Ruthanne has been Richmond Times Dispatch 2nd Team All Metro, Co-MVP
L.C. Bird, Richmond Times Dispatch All Tournament Team, Richmond Times
Dispatch Athlete of the Week, Dominion District 1ST Team, Dominion
District Player of the Year, Central Region 1st Team and Player of the
Year, Richmond Times Dispatch 1ST Team All Metro and Player of the Year,
Digital Sports Winter Warrior Player of the Year.
